KUCHING CITY - Fort Margarita |
|
|
It is built in 1879 to guard Kuching’s river approaches from pirates and situated within walking distance from the Astana on the hilltop. The Fort is named after Charles Brooke’s wife, Ranee Margaret. It is an extremely attractive and interesting building. The three storey tower block's battlement includes watchpoint on top,a courtyard surrounded by a high wall with sharp glass shards inlaid for protection and set into the wall itself are wooden windows from where the cannons were fired. Today, it houses a Police Museum, with fascinating exhibits of Brooke military, weapons captured during the communist insurgency, and the famous “laughing skulls”. It was first occupied by the Sarawak Rangers until 1932.
